Cave Story ~ Doukutsu Monogatari: Walkthrough

Endgame

You'll start on the Balcony. Go right, watching out for frenzied Mimigas. There'll be a tent like building past a helicopter - enter it to discover it is a Prefab Building, conveniently with a savepoint and a cryptic hint to the Booster 2.0. Climb the wall at the far end of the Balcony for a king's ransom in powerups - experience especially. Even higher for a strange sign saying "THAT'S ALL FOLKS!". Go even higher into the clouds and you'll go back to the Prefab Building. When you feel ready, go into the castle for the final confrontation(s). If you have the Spur, have it at fully charged before the cutscene starts to get in a first cheap shot, if you want.

First is the Throne Room. It's Misery. The first cutscene is for normal people; the second cutscene is for anyone who still has the Mimiga mask.

Misery: So it's you.
Misery drops down from the throne.
Misery: You really are a tenacious one, I'll grant you that.
Misery: I suppose you're here to destroy the core?
Misery: I used to consider you merely an out-of-control robot, but I see I misjudged you.
Misery: .....
Misery: You should know that I carry no affection for this island.
Misery: It is simply my fate that I must obey the one who wields the Crown.
Misery: Prepare yourself!!

Misery: Hee-hee-hee...
Misery: My, don't you look peculiar.
Misery drops down from the throne.
Misery: Well, good.
Misery: I was growing bored.
Misery: Let's see what you're made of.

BOSS: Misery
She teleports around and shoots at you. Be ready to jump and fly when that happens. The objective here is to keep your health and weapon as high as possible, since damage dealing will pretty much sort itself out. As she becomes more damaged, she'll start to generate rotating shield orbs which turn into powerup-generating imps. When she teleports, stand under her and shoot up with the best weapon you can (not the Missile Launcher). Prioritize staying healthy and levelled up, and do what damage you can. Nearing the end, the fight may get too busy to get in damage dealing amongst keeping alive; when this happens, take some risks, but not too much.

First defeat message for normal folk, second defeat message for Mimiga maskers.

Misery: Gahhh!
Misery drops to the floor.
Misery: Ergh...!
Misery flies away.

Misery: Gahhh!
Misery drops to the floor.
Misery: You...!
Misery flies away.

Go up the stairs to The King's Table. If you have the Spur, have it at fully charged before the cutscene starts to get in a first cheap shot, if you want. You can talk to the Mimigas beforehand. Chaco and Santa will say different things to normal people and Mimiga maskers.

Doctor: Mwah-hah-hah...
Doctor: Finally, it is complete.
Doctor: Administering red flowers to a Mimiga causes it to fly into a violent rage...
Doctor: The reason for this, in fact, is quite simple.
Doctor: The flowers contain not only a substance to draw out one's latent powers, but also one to crush one's very faculties of reason.
Doctor: It is this that I have successfully extracted and concentrated.
Doctor: You can see it in the form of this...
The Doctor holds out a giant, red gemstone.
Doctor: ...Red Crystal.
Doctor: And unlike the flowers, this Crystal will affect humans as well.
Doctor: Ho-ho-hoh...
Doctor: It is wondrous!
Doctor: Do you understand the splendor of this? Do you?!
Doctor: I doubt you do!
Doctor: Then allow me to explain it...
Doctor: In a special lecture!!
The Doctor turns an unhealthy shade of red.

BOSS: The Doctor
The Doctor will teleport around, horizontally shooting twirling fireballs. Every so often, he'll hang in midair and explode a load of them out in all directions - this is probably the only real danger here.

The best strategy I've found is to just shoot him a lot, jetpacking over the twirling fireballs. The explosions I've just walked around, avoiding them bouncing on the floor, since then you only have to dodge them coming from above. Eitherway, the main focus is again to keep as healthy and levelled as possible. If you have the Nemesis, feel free to bring it out to save delevelling your other weaponry. There are no powerups in this fight.

Doctor: Gyaaahhh!
Doctor: The... power...
Doctor: I can't control it!!!
The Doctor mutates.

BOSS: Muscle Doctor
Unlike his previous form, this guy can be a pain in the ass. He'll jump around and teleport, occasionally flashing red and charging you. That's no threat; the danger is when he spits out a very large cloud of imps that won't drop powerups and, significantly, do not time out.

Stay as close to him as you can without putting yourself at risk, that way you can blow him up with wild abandon and stay close enough to nuke as many of the imps as possible: a fully levelled Blade can be good here (but don't let it delevel; even at the low damage an imp will do, the Blade goes straight from Level 2 to Max, meaning you have no buffer against it delevelling) or the Machine Gun, but again be careful of delevelling. A Spur shot can take out a lot of them, or once again the Nemesis (no powerups).

Alternatively, gun him down from a distance, and use the Bubbler to deal with the imps. Whatever works best for you.

Doctor: Aaaiiggghh!!
The earth shakes as the Doctor dissolves into a shower of red orbs.

Now talk to Chaco, the caged purple Mimiga. When she's done, talk to her again and hearts will appear over the heads of each of the caged Mimigas for you to collect. They disappear in time though, so be quick. When you're ready, go up the stairs to Black Space. Go all right until a voice stops you.

That's far enough!!
Misery teleports in and drops to the floor, before summoning Sue.
Misery: If you value her life, step away from the core.
You jump back in surprise.
Misery: Hmph!
Misery: So even a robot can care for the life of another.
Misery: You really are different from the others who came here so many years ago.
Misery: I never dreamed you would defeat the new king...
Misery: ...Well, so be it.
Misery: Let me offer you a deal.
Misery: You can die together with the island, or you can leave and forget you ever came...
Misery: If you promise to leave at once, I can guarantee this girl's life.
Misery: Otherwise...
The earth rumbles.
?

You shall not escape...
Misery: Who goes there?! *chuckle*...
Red orbs rise from the ground, forming an eerie presence.
Have you really forgotten the voice of your master?...
Misery: !!
Hoh-hoh-hoh...
The power of the Red Crystal is wondrous indeed.
It fills me even now...
Sue runs behind you.
My body may be wrecked, but my consciousness has never been more distinct.
It feels as if I have become a superman!
Misery: You...
.....
What's wrong, Misery?
Does my form frighten you?
Misery: Grr!
Misery: Are you not dead?
Misery: Begone!!
Misery casts three attack spells at the presence. They pass straight through, doing nothing.
Tut-tut-tut...
A fool who would forget her own master does not deserve free will.
Misery.
You will be my puppet until the day you die.
The swarming presence encroaches upon Misery.
Misery: Gwaaahhhh!!
Misery is turned into a strange, possessed monster.
Sue: Um...
Sue: Let's get out of here.
Sue starts to walk away. The Red Crystal follows her, whirling around her.
Sue: Huh...?
Sue is turned into a strange, possessed monster.
Hwah-hah-hah...
You're not leaving this place alive!
The Core opens to reveal a demonic face.

BOSS: Undead Core
Here we go, the big one.

He has two minions, Sue and Misery in their monster form. Sue is a pain, so get rid of her. It's up to you whether to take out Misery; she summons hordes of monsters which drop powerups, though the homing fish can be more harmful than helpful. The core will go back and forth; you can jump to face it along the mini-cores. It will only take damage when a face is visible, though it will close as soon as it takes damage, so hit hard. When it is closed, it will leave Sue and Misery to do the damage - they are still active while the core is open though. Thee type face visible determines what strategy it will use:

A demon mask means it will surge orange blasts of energy across the floor and ceiling.

A set of teeth means that the mini-cores orbiting the large core will open and shoot orange blasts.

A toothless mouth (near death only) will shoot orange blasts to signify its arrival. Orange blasts of energy will surge across the floor and ceiling, and every so often, three powerful white blasts of energy will obliterate anything in the horizontal range of the core.

Plumes of smoke and explosions erupt from the Core as it sinks down and out. The camera fades.

It's running!

The camera fades in on Sue's Mom and Itoh, who are on the Balcony with a now-functional helicopter.
Itoh: We've got enough fuel! We're ready to go at any time.
Itoh: Heh... I never dreamed I'd actually make it back to the surface...
Itoh walks over to Sue's Mom.
Sue's Mom: I wonder if they're all right...
Stone blocks rain from the ceiling.
Itoh: An earthquake...?
Sue's Mom: The core...?
Sue's Mom: It couldn't be!
The camera fades out and cuts to you and Sue.
Sue: Oh no...
Sue walks over to you.
Sue: The island's starting to collapse!
Sue: It won't be long before this place crumbles, too!
Sue: We've gotta get out of here!
Sue runs away.

Run out of the castle. Notice that the Mimigas are now gone from their cells. Once you're out of the castle, Sue is there again.

Sue is gesturing wildly.
Sue: Over here!
Sue: Run with all you got, or you're gonna get crushed!!

Run as far as you can, dodging the blocks. Don't let yourself be hurt at all if you're doing the hard route. Hard routers, go back into the Prefab Building, save, and skip to the Sacred Grounds section. If the door doesn't open, you messed up somewhere. You failed at life; try again. Easy routers, continue on.

Sue: There's nowhere else to run. We'll have to jump for it.
Sue: It's either that or sit here and let these rocks crush us!
Sue: You ready? Jump as far as you can!
Sue jumps off the edge of the Balcony.

Jump off the edge. Be careful to jump off the edge, not fall off the bottom, otherwise you'll die.

Camera zooms to the helicopter.
Sue's Mom: The island's falling...
Itoh: It's too dangerous. We've got to pull out!
The camera cuts to the Egg Corridor, Grasstown, the Sand Zone, the Labyrinth, the flooded Labyrinth Base, and the Plantation, before cutting to a zoom-in of the whole island falling. Cut to you, falling at a dangerous speed through the clouds. You fall off screen
Just as you fall off screen, cut just below to Kazuma, who has caught you on the back of his Sky Dragon and Sue in the beak.
Kazuma: Phew...
Kazuma: I never thought you'd actually pull it off.
Kazuma: Blowing up the core...
Kazuma: Well, now the world ought to be free from any future incarnations of the Doctor.
Kazuma: Peace has been preserved!
Kazuma: Now, let's go home.
The credits roll.
