Cave Story ~ Doukutsu Monogatari: Walkthrough

The Start Caves

You'll start off in a room called Start Point. You don't have a weapon right now, but don't worry. Just mess around for a bit, getting used to moving around. Press down over something to use it. You can use the boxes with hearts in them to refill your health (and later, missiles). You can use the rotating disks to save your game, meaning you can continue from that point if you die. Jump up to the top and use the door by pressing down on it.

You'll enter a cave called First Cave. The camera will pan towards the direction you're facing, which can be a bit disorienting if you're a noob. You'll get used to it. Face left and go down the tunnel, carefully jumping over the red spikes. Go slowly, as to not slide down a slope into a set of spikes, since at your current 3HP, one touch is death. You'll soon encounter some bats; you can't do anything about them, so just dodge past them. You'll see a heart in a capsule. Jump up and get it (press down) to get some more HP. These are Life Capsules, and getting them improves your max HP. Continue down the tunnel, dodging the bats. You'll get to a small lake. You'll notice that you can't jump very far when submerged in water, so you'll have to jump from the end of the lake, just under the bats. Watch your timing here, and get a running jump onto the wall. There'll be something jumping to get you on the other side; just ignore it and jump over, being careful to avoid the bat. Carry on to the stone head. Stand in front of the mouth and press down (it acts like a door).

You'll enter the room of the Hermit Gunsmith. Press down to talk to the hermit (he's not very responsive at the moment). You need a weapon, so empty the treasure chest at the end to get your first weapon, the Polar Star.

Now, a tutorial on the weapon system. The A and S keys change weapons; you only have one, so trying is pretty futile at the moment. You'll notice that the Shoot button now does something, and your guy has a blue pistol out in front of him. When you kill a monster, it will drop an item. Right now, they'll only drop either hearts (to restore health) or bouncing yellow experience crystals. Your weapons have levels, from 1-3. Collecting experience raises their levels, RPG style. If you get bumped by a monster, they'll lose experience, and may drop a level. At level 3, you can then get them to Max level. This is the threshold of a level 4, if it existed, when the experience bar is full on level 3. This only serves as insurance so that your weapon doesn't instantly drop to level 2 if you get bumped at max.

So, leave the gunsmith's hut, and go left. You can kill the bat in one shot, but the bouncing monster will take two shots to go down (when your weapon does more damage at levels 2 and 3, it will die in one shot). Make sure to grab anything that they drop. Note that if you look up and shoot, you will shoot up, and if you jump and shoot while looking down, you will shoot down. The more practiced gunslingers will be able to perform incredible feats of acrobatics around their foes. For now, just hop back to the Start Point, being mindful of the spikes, killing everything in your path and collecting the experience dropped. Use the Heart Box if necessary, and save your game. I'd normally go back and forth between the Start Point and the Hermit Gunsmith until my Polar Star was maxed out, this is optional though. When you're ready, go right from the Start Point entrance. You can shoot the grey blocks, clearing a path. Gun down all the bouncing monsters, and then shoot the strange monster possessing the door to death. After that, proceed through the door.

Kazuma: Suuuuue!
Kazuma: Answer me!
Kazuma: I'm so hungry...
Kazuma: There's nothing to eat and I've been reduced to feeding on cockroaches.
Kazuma: ...Ha-ha. That was a joke.
Kazuma: Ha-ha.
Kazuma: ...If I have to, though, I really will...
