Cave Story ~ Doukutsu Monogatari: Walkthrough
The Labyrinth
Total blackness.
!!
.....
It looks like you hit the ground.
Where is this place?
The camera fades in.
Here you are in the Labyrinth. You'll probably be hurting after the fight with
Toroko, so shoot down the savepoint. Unfortunately, there's no way to get your
lost health back apart from killing the purple blobs. Unfortunately, they fly
up and shoot at you. The Blade is surprisingly effective here, even at Level
1. Don't worry too much here about levelling up - you'll have plenty of time
to do that later. Note that if you have the Machine Gun, you can just fly up
and ignore the purple blobs.
Jump up along the platforms. The Blade and the Bubbler are the best weapons to
use. Note that the purple blobs don't shoot until they're in the air, so you
can startle them into jumping, take their place, and shoot up. You'll come to
a group of three blobs on the left hand side - the bottom one is sitting on a
Life Capsule. We'll have to steal it. The Fireball can be used over the top of
the ledge to dispense with them, and the Blade can take out any remainders.
Grab the Life Capsule and head up. Ride the sliding blocks and use the computer
terminal at the top to open the door. Fall back down, save, and out the door
you go.
The cockroach will go down in one Blade. Carry on around the tunnel, but be on
your guard for sliding blocks, since if you get crushed by one, it's all over.
Go through the next door to Labyrinth W.
Go across, blading the purple blobs as you go. Blade all the roaches by the
door and go on in. The roaches in here aren't hostile. There's a savepoint,
which should be used. You can now walk in and out of the shop, levelling up
your weapons off the roaches. If you have the Polar Star, you can trade it
and your Fireball for a Snake. It's quite a nice weapon, but if you get it,
you won't be able to get the Spur later, which is ever nicer.
Go all right, slaying cockroaches as you go. Strategic use of the Fireball,
if you have it, can kill the grounded ones. Then you'll come to two flying ones
and a wall - just time their shots and jump up and shoot accordingly. Keep
going. There's a door at the far end - enter it to find a save point and a few
people. Curly's there, too. Talk to everyone. The physician heals you, but also
gives you a quest.
So off you go to the Clinic: it's at the top left. Once you leave the Clinic,
the roaches will be back. A Level 3 Blade, with its high range and above-par
damage, is good here. Go to the top. You'll notice a destructible block. Only
machine gunners will be able to access it right now. Go through it if you can,
through the door, and raid the Arms Barrier, which halves exp loss when hit.
The Clinic is strangely arena shaped and contains one treasure chest. Raid it
for a Cure-All, and get ready.
BOSS: Pooh Black
Stick him with the Blade until he dies. The sticking action does a lot of
damage. To avoid being squashed, stay on the move.
Pretty simple. Go back to the physician and give him the Cure-All. The roaches
between there and the Clinic should be enough to refill any weapons that need
refilling. Now you can continue on to the next boss.
From the clinic area, kill everything and go right to a dead end. You'll have
to curve-jump onto the sliding block and ride it up. Watch out for the spikes,
and don't get crushed. Next, it's the same, but riding one down. Now there's
a short bit of cover before a lot of cockroaches, and no cover against their
shots. Oh, and that bulldozer thing is a boss, you'll be glad to know. The
Blade is always good, since it sticks in purple bullets quite satisfyingly, but
otherwise the Bubbler has a good range, and can functional as a shield of sorts.
The machine gun is a fast killer, if you have it. Eventually, an ominous
boss HP bar appears, and the Bulldozer will start chasing you.
BOSS: Monster X
Jump about on the treads until it stops and opens. It won't take damage until
all the green turrets are destroyed - then it'll start unleashing homing fish,
which give off a good amount of powerups if you can get them. A Level 3 Blade
is good because of the range effect, and its strong damage is good in the
second stage even if it isn't fully levelled.
Hopefully you didn't die too much. This guy can be trouble. Carry on to the
right, through the door. There'll be a flash of light, and Professor Booster
will fall to the floor. Save at the savepoint, and prepare for a momentous
decision.
The decision: Are you going for the easy or the hard playthrough? The easy
playthrough is definitely one you should pick for your first playthrough, as
the hard one introduces a lot of extra backstory which ties in at various
places. The hard playthrough leaves you with crappier equipment, and some
levels are harder. However, it will give you a chance to save Curly from death,
which in turn lets you into a secret level. Finishing this secret level earns
you the best ending, which is the whole point. It's your call.
If you decided to go for the easy playthrough, drop down to talk to Professor
Booster.
Oohhh...
Booster: Oh!
Booster: What are you doing here?!
Booster: .....
Booster: Really, so Misery sent you here too...
Booster: *chuckle*...
Booster: Maybe there's a silver lining after all...
Booster: You see, this island floats in the sky by the power of a certain organism, and I've recently discovered its location.
Booster: This labyrinth.
Booster: The organism lives somewhere within this very labyrinth.
Booster: If one could destroy it, the island would cease to function.
Booster: *chuckle*
Booster: The doctor must really be in a rush, to send you into the very heart of this island.
Booster: Take this with you.
Booster gives you the Booster v0.8
Booster: This little machine will help you fly.
Booster: If you press the Jump button in midair, you can hover.
Booster: Use it on the Item Screen to equip it.
Booster: Phew...
Booster: The minute I was sent flying, I thought it was all over.
Booster: And yet it enabled me to meet you once again...
Booster: It looks like my luck has run out here.
Booster: I pray for your victory...
Booster dies.
Now go to the Item Screen and equip your Booster. Boost back up to the save
point, heal, and continue on.
If you took the hard option, you now have to machine gun or jump across the
chasm, ignoring the fallen Professor. There's a red dot where you have to
jump.
Enter the Boulder Chamber. If Curly isn't there, go back to the physician's
place and talk to everyone a few times. When you exit and enter again, she
shouldn't be there, meaning she's at the Boulder Chamber. If you got the
Booster 0.8 and didn't have a chance to get the Arms Barrier, go get it now.
At the Boulder Chamber, talk to Curly.
Curly: Aha!
Curly: I was wondering when you'd show up.
Curly: If we can just get this big rock out of the way, we can get to the exit.
Curly: Rumor has it though, that a monster nest lies just beyond...
Curly: So ya better be ready for that.
Curly: Anyway, let's get this thing out of the way.
Curly: You hold that side.
Go hold the side opposite Curly.
Curly: Ready? Push!
RRRRGH!
The two strain at the rock.
Curly: .....
Curly: It hasn't moved one bit.
Curly: I'm not sure the two of us are strong enough...
Huzzah!
Balrog drops in.
Curly: You!
Balrog: Hohoho!
Balrog: You're alive, I see!
Balrog: Not only that, you're trying to get out of the Labyrinth!
Balrog: Shouldn't you be staying put like good little robots?
Balrog: You can't stand up to my master any more than I can, you know.
Balrog: Fine, then!
Balrog: I'll just put a stop to this!
Balrog: Hope you don't mind being iron scraps!
Curly: Just who we were looking for!
Curly: Take the middle, will you?
Balrog walks over and begins to help.
Curly: Ready? One, two...
Balrog realises and pushes them away angrily.
Balrog: ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING TO ME?!
BOSS: Balrog
He hasn't learned much from last time. Just blow his brains out for a while
using whatever weapon you feel like. This is a cakewalk after Monster X.
Balrog: You win...
Balrog: I'll move the rock for you.
Balrog: But remember...
Balrog: Don't tell ANYONE that I helped you.
Curly: Your secret's safe with us!
Balrog walks to the middle of the rock to help.
Curly: Ready? Push!
The three strain for a while before Balrog, with a massive effort, throws
the rock away.
Balrog: Gaaaahhhh!!!
Balrog: Now, remember.
Balrog: Don't tell a soul that I helped you.
Curly: We won't!
Balrog flies off. A treasure chest falls from the ceiling.
Curly: I don't think he's really that bad of a guy.
A save point appears. Grab the treasure chest to replace your Missiles with
Super Missiles. Go back to the Heart Box in the previous room to heal up, and
you can get some exp from roaches to level up your new missiles. When you're
ready, go through the door.
In this zone, Curly fights with you, using the Machine Gun or Polar Star
depending on whether or not you traded. The strange pods are completely
harmless, and are pretty much just there for powerups. However, the shuriken
throwing cockroaches are another matter. They jump around, and their shurikens
are indestrictible. The wide slashing on a Blade can be effective, or Fireball
them from a safe vantage point. Keep going to the right, and drop down the
tunnel at the end. Use the Bubbler for safe shots if you want to. After this
drop is a large group of pods, which is useful. Soon after are some odd
things that spew bats - aim for the bases, but the bats can give off useful
powerups. Keep going. Keep safety a priority - send Curly in to do most of the
dangerous stuff. Use the computer terminal at the end to remove the
obstruction. The teleporter at the bottom goes to the Labyrinth Shop - the
teleporter here now works, so feel free to save (unless you have neither the
Machine Gun or Booster v0.8, in which case you'll have no way of getting back).
Carry on to the right. At the pink orbs, try to pick off the smaller ones
orbiting ther big ones first, since if the big one falls first, the smaller
ones will fly at you. Alternatively, use the Bubbler or Blade to try and
kill all of them at once. Go through the door at the end.
A change of scenery. Curly's not sure where you are, but for our purposes,
you're still in the Labyrinth. Technically, you're somewhere a lot more
dangerous. The savepoint is necessary, before going on.
Firstly, use the computer above you to raise the shutters. Abnormality in
Shutter No. 4? Follow Curly and shoot the door marked "4" until it raises all
the way. Go back and use the computer again to lower the lift. Take the new
opening through the water to another computer which opens the final shutter.
Now you can go back and save, before going into the main chamber. If you're
taking the hard playthrough, go all the way to the bottom-right corner to get
a tow cable. Notice the giant, menacing-looking monster? Guess. Anyway, talk
to Curly.
Curly: Look.
Curly: This is a soldier from the surface.
Curly: It's all banged up.
Curly: There's a ton more like it, too.
Curly: What on earth could've...
Curly: Not a Mimiga. No, to do this much damage...
Curly: !!!
The robot Curly is standing by starts flashing.
Curly: It's still alive!!
Robot: *Bzzbzbzztbz*
Robot: TEAM 9 ANNIHILATED
Robot: FAILED TO DESTROY TARGET
Robot: CURRENT FORCES INSUFFICIENT
Robot: RETREAT
Robot: RETREAT!!
The shutter closes.
BOSS: Core
This guy can be a pain. Try to pick off any projectiles coming your way for
powerups. The Core only takes damage through the large head, when it is open.
It will open for short periods, when it thrusts the smaller heads forward as
a shield. Shoot them to repel them back, and unload your strongest projectiles
on him - your new Super Missiles are a prime example.
At some point during the fight, he'll change the water current to blow you
back against the wall, and shoot you with large death projectiles while you're
stuck. Just walk forward against the current, and you'll avoid them hopefully.
Don't worry too much about air, as the water level fluctuates wildly.
Curly: We did it?!
Misery appears next to the dying Core.
Misery: Hmph!
Misery: Pulled it off, I see!
Curly: You!
Curly: You're that witch who tossed me down here!
Curly: Those children had better be safe.
Misery: Ha! Be silent!
Misery: You're no mother!
Misery: Do you even know what this is?!
Curly: What?
Misery: Hmph. This is what I hate about robots.
Misery: This is the heart of the island!
Misery: If you stop it, the island will fall to the earth!
Misery: Is that your grand plan?
Misery: To take the island down with you in a blaze of glory?!
Misery: Fools!!
The Doctor teleports in.
Doctor: Hey!
Doctor: What are you doing? Bring the core to the laboratory at once!
Doctor: There's still time!
Misery: HooooooOOOOOOOOH!!
Misery teleports the Core away.
Now the water level starts to rise. Soon there'll be nowhere left for air, and
you'll drown. Hard routers will be treated to some cryptic, near death rhetoric
and everyone will see a little cutscene.
Hard routers only:
Did you know that the witch-woman Jenka once had a brother?
His name was Ballos.
Like his sister, he wielded powers far beyond those of mortals...
Everyone:
......?
...You can breathe.
However, you'll wake up - Curly gave you her air-tank. If you're taking the
hard route, talk to her and drag her with you using the tow cable. Go left,
save, and go through the (now open) lion's head. Sorry to all those easy
players, but Curly is gone for good now. You'll end up in a completely new
zone.
