Why not.

Cave Story ~ Doukutsu Monogatari: Walkthrough

The Sand Zone

King: So we're...weapons?
Sue: That's right.
Sue: The Doctor wants to use the red flowers to make you attack the humans.
Nerd: W--Why does he want to do that?!
Sue: That man is...
Sue: ...is like a demon.
Nerd: And he's going to use those flowers on Toroko?
Sue: As far as I can tell, he's still looking for them.
Sue: We can only hope he doesn't find them.
Nerd: If...
Nerd: If he finds those flowers, Toroko...
Sue: She would go wild... A weapon of death...
King: I'll never allow that to happen!
Cut to Arthur's House. Kazuma is there, and Booster is teleporting in.
Booster: Oooohh...
Kazuma: Are you okay?
Booster: ...Mmm.
Booster: My life flashed before my eyes.
Kazuma: .....
Sue bursts in.
Sue: Kazuma!!
Sue: And Professor Booster!
Booster: Oh!
Booster approaches Sue.
Booster: You're all right, then?!
Sue: Well, more or less.
Sue approaches Booster, followed by King.
King: .....
Booster Who's that Mimiga?
Sue looks at King. He turns away.
Sue: That's King.
Sue: A friend of mine here in the village.
Sue: There used to be tons of Mimigas here.
Sue: Nearly all of them, though, have been kidnapped by the Doctor's goons.
Sue: Even King has lost friends...
You teleport in.

Talk to Sue.

Sue: Welcome back.
Sue: Looks like I owe you another one.
Sue: With my brother's help, we should be able to get around the password for that egg.
Sue: Booster!
Sue: Can we take this little guy with us when we go?
Kazuma checks the computer.
Booster: .....
Kazuma: Professor.
Sue: ???
Booster: Sue, my dear...
Booster: We have to suspend our escape.
Booster: The Doctor has located the red flowers.
King: !!!
Sue: What?
Booster: While he has not yet acquired them, it is only a matter of time.
Booster: The location is the Sand Zone.
Booster: The flowers are apparently to be found somewhere in the Sand Zone.
King: The Sand Zone?
King: You mean, that's where we'll find the Doctor?
Booster: Well, more likely one of his servants.
Booster: If we don't destroy those flowers before they get their hands on them...
Booster: However, the Sand Zone is exceedingly dangerous.
Booster: Even supposing we made the trip, there's no guarantee that we would return alive...
King: You're giving up?
Booster: Actually...
Booster: There's one of us who's a perfect match for this job.
Booster turns towards you.
Booster: It's you.
Kazuma: ...Who IS he?
Booster: In fact...
Booster: This is one of the armed scout robots that were dispatched to this island 10 years ago.
Kazuma: A robot?!
Booster: My impression was that they had been completely wiped out, but I do not know the particulars.
Booster: It's entirely possible that one of them could have...
Kazuma: Professor.
Kazuma: I've connected to the Sand Zone.
Booster: I see.
Booster: You are the most suited to exploring this island.
Booster: Please. Give us your aid.

Now grab the teleporter to the Sand Zone.

In the Sand Zone, head straight left. A girl will see you and run off. Follow her. In the staircase of insects, just gun them all down and continue on your way. At the top, there'll be a house with a wine glass above it. Go in. You'll see a few sleeping Mimigas and that girl from before.

Aaaaahhhh!
The girl walks over to inspect you.
Girl: Ooohhh!
The Mimigas wake up.
Girl: We have a VISITOR!
Girl: I know what it is you're looking for!
Girl: But wake up!
Girl: Mimigas aren't your enemies!
Girl: Mimigas are harmless!!
Girl: Too bad for you, but...
The girl pulls out a machine gun.
Girl: I'm on their side!

Wow, she sure sounds insane. But still, she has a gun, what are you gonna do.

BOSS: Girl and Mimigas
Switch to the Fireball; that way you can deal damage while in the air (the girl and the Mimigas stay on the ground). The Mimigas can only be knocked out, but that's good, since they can still hurt you. The main threat is the girl. When she starts flashing white, jump over the machine gun fire. Keep knocking her with fireballs and you'll be fine.

Girl: You win...
Girl: I can't fight anymore...
Girl: I suppose you're going to kill all the Mimigas, just like the other robots? [YES/NO]
Pick No.
Girl: Oh!
The girl gets up and walks to you.
Girl: You're with the Mimigas too?
Girl: That's right, there's nothing bad about them!
Girl: I'm Curly. Curly Brace.
Curly: When I woke up, I was with these children.
Curly: I don't have any memories before that...
Curly: Amnesia, you might say.
Curly: I was...probably a Mimiga-butcher just like the other robots...
Curly: Oh, wow.
Curly: That Polar Star of yours is in awful shape.
Curly: Do you want to trade it for my machine gun? [YES/NO]

This is an important decision. If it's your first playthrough, I recommend you get the machine gun, as it gives you the power of flight at level 3 by shooting at the floor and propelling yourself upward. However, if it's your second playthrough, or if you're shooting for the hard ending (though why you'd be shooting for the hard ending on your first playthrough is beyond me) then you might want to keep hold of your Polar Star for now. Doing so will give you access to either the Snake or the Spur later on. See the weapons guide for more detail. If you don't get it and change your mind halfway through the Sand Zone, you can come back and get it; once you have it though, the trade is permanent. You can't get the machine gun after the Sand Zone either. It's your call. Talk to the Mimigas and Curly. You'll learn numerous things, including:
1) Don't step on the sand - there might be sandcrocs.
2) Looking for red flowers? Ask Jenka, but bring the dog in the bedroom.
3) To move the Sunstones, you need to lift the spell.
4) Fish tastes nice to Mimigas.
Anyway. Go into the spare room and grab the dog, save and heal if needed. Check the map - there's a secret passage. Investigate it - a bit of poking around the far end will earn you Curly's Underwear. Now exit this house. If you got the machine gun, or if you got hurt in the fight with Curly, go level your weapons up. Especially the machine gun, if you have it.

From the house, go right. Shoot down any obstructions. When you see a strange sun-like buzzsaw, stop. Shoot through the wall and kill it with your favourite weapon - but keep a distance, because it explodes into a swarm of smaller buzzsaws. These are rich in powerups. Now, to get the Life Capsule, you need to shoot a stairway into the blocks, so that you have a ledge to stand on near the platform, but a clear path to it. If you're intelligent enough to either work out what I mean or do it yourself, well done, one more Life Capsule. Continue on to the right, gunning down the buzzsaws. DON'T touch the sand. Soon enough you'll see a save point, partially hidden by the background. To get to it, you have to jump through the block with a pawprint on it. Machine gunners will have no problem here, but Polar Star people will have some jumping and shooting to do. Shoot as much of the top wall out as you can, then whittle a staircase into the wall on your left so you can get back up. Repeat until you can get a clear jump through the paw block. Come out on the other side, and ignore the buzzsaws. Just jump over the blocks containing them. Soon enough, you'll have to kill one to proceed - try to minimize damage to blocks. You'll probably still have to kill the next one. After that, you'll find two sandpits. The left one has a Heart Box, which is safe, and the right one has nothing but a sandcroc waiting to pop out at you. The suicidally inclined may wish to lure the sandcroc by jumping lightly onto the sand, then gunning it down. You'll have to repeat this a few times in order to kill it. I am not recommending that you do this, I am just saying it is possible. The next wall contains two sneakily hidden falling execution blocks - however, there are hearts to be had. These shouldn't be necessary, what with the Heart Box right there, but still. Now continue right, and a strange voice appears. Odd how this sandpit is rectangular and just fits the screen, almost like an arena.

I see Balrog failed in his duty...
Misery appears.
Misery: Hmmmm...
Misery: You look like quite a fighter.
Misery: But at this juncture, you're proving yourself rather a nuisance.
Misery: Shall we settle this?
The earth begins to tremble.
?!
Misery: No, there's no need for me to get involved.
A strange, sand-encrusted monster rises from the earth.

BOSS: Omega
This boss is only vulnerable when it is open. Unload missiles like hell in this stage, then switch to a more moderate weapon to take down as many red sandorbs as you can for powerups. When it starts jumping, dash under it occasionally. This one's mostly about skillfully shooting the orbs, which is somewhat easier with a machine gun, but can be done with a Bubbler or Polar Star.

Now that that's over, the spell on the Sunstones is apparently lifted. Go you. Go back to the Heart Box for some necessary healing and refilling. On your way back, any Buzzsaws you didn't kill previously can be used to level your weapons back up after that fight. When you get to them, the two grey stones will part, revealing a passage down. You can go to Curly's to save and heal if you want. After that, back to the Sunstones. Shoot down the platforms, killing the skulls as you go, until there is an opening to your left. There's a building and a sign in front of it proudly proclaiming that it is Jenka's House. Note the large group of blocks on the other side of the platform - those contain respawning hearts and missile refills for the taking.

Talk to the old woman.

Woman: Oh, my!
Woman: My precious puppy!
You give her the puppy.
Woman: You brought him back, I take it.
Woman: Many thanks.
Woman: What's that?
Woman: Red flowers?
Huzzah!
Balrog crashes through the ceiling. The dog barks loudly.
Balrog: How's it going, Jenka?
Jenka: Ah, Balrog.
Jenka: You're doing well, I see.
Jenka: And how is my halfwit of a daughter faring?
Balrog: Hee-hee-hee!
Balrog: Halfwit? You mean Misery?
Balrog: She's fine, just fine.
Balrog: A new master has appeared.
Balrog: This time, the earth will be ours!
Jenka: So once again you two plot to...
Balrog: I'm not here to give you any trouble.
Balrog: I just came to collect the key to the storehouse.
Balrog: The one where the flower seeds are kept!
Jenka: .....
Jenka: My...
Jenka: What on earth are you talking about?
Balrog: Hoho!
Balrog: Playing the fool, are you?!
Balrog: .....
Balrog: I see how it is.
Balrog: So you've chosen to betray us.
Balrog: You'll regret it.
Balrog flies away through the ceiling. There is a pause.
Jenka: A new master...
Jenka: That good-for-nothing.
Jenka: .....
Jenka: There are actually four others.
Jenka: Four more puppies of mine...
Jenka: And my hips are so weak.
Jenka: Could this old woman trouble you to find her puppies for her?

Great, you're now on another quest. Luckily, the next puppy is easy to get to. Go back up the platforms until you see a pawprint block next to the row of destructible blocks. Shoot the blocks away and pass through the pawprint. Follow the tunnel and you'll find a Life Capsule and a treasure chest containing a dog. I sure hope for Jenka's sake they don't have animal rights protesters on the island. Go back to Jenka's with the dog and give it to her.

Jenka: My my, how quick.
Jenka: That is indeed one of my dear puppies.
You give her the puppy.
Jenka: Hmmm...
Jenka: You're a soldier from the surface, aren't you.
Jenka: .....
Jenka: It wasn't long ago that hundreds of robots like you came to this island.
Jenka: Countless Mimigas perished at their hands.
Jenka: As did the humans who tried to protect them.
Jenka: Cornered, the Mimigas finally ingested the forbidden red flowers, and in their murderous rage began to strike back against the robots.
Jenka: Had the red flowers not existed, the Mimigas might have vanished entirely from the island...
Jenka: Three more left.Good luck.

Save, and off we go for the next puppy. Shoot down all the platforms and drop down. The sand here is safe. The sign says "This way to Sand Zone Storehouse". Drop to the sand, being careful of enemies. The monsters here take a bit of punishment before dying, and the birds carrying the skulls shoot bones. At the end, a bouncing skeleton which shoots bones appears. Kill it, and approach the dog. It'll run off, so press down when it runs past you. This takes some timing, and if you miss it, you'll have to wait until it comes back to try again. When you have the puppy, go back to Jenka's and give it to her.

Jenka: Oooh.
Jenka: Yes, yes.
Jenka: That is certainly one of my darling puppies.
You give her the puppy.
Jenka: Thank you kindly. We're up to three now...
Jenka: .....
Jenka: Have you ever seen a frenzied Mimiga?
Jenka: The cornered Mimigas hoped that the red flowers would grant them strength.
Jenka: They ate them, and then they fought the robots.
Jenka: However...
Jenka: Do you know what happened to them afterwards?
Jenka: .....
Jenka: It is a sad tale...
Jenka: The enraged Mimigas, likely unable to control their own actions, disappeared without a trace.
Jenka: If rumors are to be trusted, they descended to the surface, where humans live.
Jenka: An army of ferocious Mimigas loosed upon the earth...
Jenka: If that were true...
Jenka: Do you understand now?
Jenka: Do you understand how dangerous the red flowers are?
Jenka: .....
Jenka: Two more to go...

Save, then go back and shoot down the platforms. This time, stay on the platforms rather than the sand. You can pick the birds off from a distance with the Bubbler. Following the platforms along, you'll see two pawprint blocks. Go through them, then to the left, to see a building. A dog runs into it.

Unfortunately, you can't see where you're going. Fortunately, the map works, so use that to navigate to the dog. Avoid the downdraft; it'll blow you into a sandcroc. Take the passage above it. When you have the dog, take it back to Jenka - beware the respawned monsters on the way back.

Jenka: They seem to just adore you.
Jenka: My puppies don't waste their affection on bad sorts.
Jenka: Many thanks...
You give her the puppy.
Jenka: .....
Jenka: You're after the storehouse key, aren't you.
Jenka: Wherein lie the seeds to the red flowers...
Jenka: I don't care who you are, you're not getting the key.
Jenka: To open the storehouse would invite that same tragedy all over again...
Jenka: One, two, three...
Jenka: There's only one left.

Save, and off to find the last puppy we go. This one involves quite a long trek. Go down the platforms and all right, killing everything in sight. If you don't have the machine gun, you'll have to go back and follow the platforms to jump the wall at the end. Now you come to a three-level series of platforms - the bottom one has a few walking skulls which can be easily taken out with the Fireball from safe vantage point. Go across the bottom platform, then jump up to the middle one. A bouncing, bone-throwing skeleton is here. You can trap it at the end, on the small block, before killing it, or you can throw fireballs over the edge. Go across and jump up to the top platform. More fireball action to kill the two walking skulls. Now are a multitude of pillars, with birds. Snipe the birds off one at a time (i.e. don't use the Bubbler, as it won't be able to keep up with the massive swarm of birds it disturbs) with the Polar Star/Machine Gun. Eventually a sleeping dog will come into view. Go to the far right and hop the blocks, or fly if you have the machine gun, and grab it. Shooting the destructible blocks rewards you with a save point and a Heart Box. Return to Jenka with the dog. Hey, what the hell?

Jenka has been smashed into the ground. Balrog is standing nearby.
Balrog: The storehouse key? Why, THANK you, you shouldn't have!
Balrog: Catch you later!
Jenka: Wait!!
Balrog turns to you, grinning, before flying off.

Go help out Jenka.

Jenka: Oohhh...
Jenka: You?
You help Jenka out of the floor, and give her the puppy.
Jenka: The key...
Jenka: They stole the key...
Jenka: Please.
Jenka: You must stop them.
Jenka: They plan to enrage the Mimigas and release them onto the surface.
Jenka: Oh, yes...
Jenka: You might want this...
Jenka gives you a Life Pot.
Jenka: You can use this once, but only once, to restore your health.

Huh. Go back to the storehouse, where you found the sleeping dog. Go in. It's Misery, and making his debut appearance, the Doctor.

Misery: My lord.
Misery: I have brought all the seeds as you requested.
Doctor: Well done.
Doctor: By the by...
Doctor: The flowers that bloom there.
Misery looks to a pile of flowers.
Doctor: Are those the demon flowers?
Misery: Indeed.
Doctor: My, my...
Doctor: They're more uncanny than even I had imagined...
Misery: My lord...
Misery: Shall I consume one as a test?
Doctor: ...No, let us not do that.
Doctor: .....
Doctor: Hmmmm...
Doctor: Instead, let us test the reaction on a Mimiga.
Misery: Yes, my lord.
Misery teleports Toroko into the room, who then falls to the ground.
Oof!
Toroko: .....
Toroko: Where am...?
Toroko: Waah!
Toroko runs away. Balrog crashes through the ceiling, stopping her progress.
Balrog: Oh-oh.
Balrog: Where do you think you're going?
Misery: Balrog.
Misery: Feed this one a flower.
Balrog: You got it.
Balrog tries to force-feed Toroko a flower.
Toroko: No! Stop!
Balrog: Eat it. Eat it!
Get your hands off her!!
King appears in the doorway, brandishing a sword. He runs up to Balrog and slashes. Balrog flies away in fear.
King: Toroko!
King: Are you okay?!
Toroko: ...K...King...?
Toroko: Ooohhhh...
Toroko: My...my head...
King: !!
King: No!!
King: You! You're that Doctor!
Doctor: .....
Doctor: Why, yes.
Doctor: I am the Doctor.
Doctor: And from now on, I am your new leader.
Doctor: Pleased to make your acquaintance.
Doctor: Now, what exactly is it you plan to do with that sword?
Doctor: Hm-hm-hmm...
King: I'll kill you!!
King rushes towards the Doctor. Just before he can reach him, Misery flies away and casts a vicious lightning bolt, sending King flying against the wall.
Doctor: My, are they really so fragile before the rage takes them?
You appear in the doorway.
Doctor: Oho!
Doctor: You're that soldier from the surface!
Doctor: You've come at a splendid time.
Doctor: Here, they're all yours!
Doctor: Oh, no, no, don't thank me.
Doctor: Have fun, you three.
The Doctor disappears. Toroko stands up and becomes much larger, eyes red.

BOSS: Frenzied Toroko
Don't focus on dealing damage, focus on avoiding it. The blocks Toroko throws are indestructible, and serve as a shield. When they break, they release yellow flowers, which can be shot for powerups. It's not very easy to unload missiles, since she jumps around a lot. The Polar Star/Machine Gun is your best bet, but remember that the main focus is avoiding damage so that it doesn't delevel. If it does delevel, try something else. The Fireball can be quite effective in dealing with flowers.

When that's over, Toroko turns back into her normal self and dies. Talk to King. His final request is for you to avenge him, which you will do at some point. Take his Blade, a very awesome weapon. Leave the building.

Huzzah! Balrog drops in, crushing you.
Balrog: Sorry! Hee-hee-hee.
Misery teleports in.
Misery: So you're alive.
Misery: You remind me of the one back then.
Misery: A tough little robot just like you...
Misery: I can see confronting you directly just makes things complicated.
Misery: To the Labyrinth with you.
Misery teleports you away. Balrog smiles.
Misery: And you as well.
Balrog: ...Uh?
Misery teleports Balrog away.
Misery: Ho-ho-ho...
Misery: Heavens, that felt good.
