Be the super elite pursuing champ.

You think that they ran off here.

That, or I'm just railroading you again.

Both are plausible.

Railroading is a term used in discussion of Tabletop RPGs or interactive webcomics such as RubyQuest where the Dungeon Master or Author tries to get the players on the main path in any way possible.

I've railroaded countless times within this adventure. Gotta get people to experience this cave's story one way or another. Though, in most cases, people really don't like railroading. It probably feels like it's limiting the creative freedom that the players have over the story.

If a Dungeons & Dragons session was all railroading, it would feel like just a glorified book or shitty JRPG, and would probably not be fun. But if it were all improvisation and there was zero railroading whatsoever, it would be chaos, and getting back onto the main story would be damn-near impossible.

It's hard to have a good balance between player freedom and player railroading. I am not at all an expert at this, so I may be in either the former or latter places, but whatever.

Cave Story: Retold is a retelling of a jumping-and-shooting action game. Canon is just a suggestion. The future is screwed. Timelines are crossing. Can you save the world from destruction?

May contain scenes with pixelated violence. And blood. Reader discretion is advised.

Adventure Map

Inspired by old sprite comics (like Bob and George or MS Paint Masterpieces (which i am realizing are both Mega Man sprite comics (not to be confused with megaman sprite comic))), an old Cave Story sprite comic that I found on cavestory.org (probably Negative 127) and, in MSPFA fashion, MS Paint Adventures such as Problem Sleuth and Homestuck.
